Job Description

Job Purpose

To direct and control all operational functions of the rig(s) under his supervision: including safety, drilling, moving, logistics (material + personnel) and maintenance; coordinate all phases of the rig’s operations in a safe, effective, and efficient manner, including management of sub-contractors services at the rig side. 

Key Responsibilities/Tasks

  • Ensure well programs and schedules are well known to the rig sides and adequate written instruction is given e.g., technical advises on operation or find support and information whenever required or deemed necessary by operations or client.

  • Manage and oversee the utilization of resources, equipment, and personnel to minimize NPT.
  • Ensuring the Company’s program is utilized routinely at a high standard.
  • Maintain regular contact with rig staff by personally visiting rigs / yards.
  • To take responsibility for overall staff to secure a motivated disciplined and productive workforce, especially to be a good listener and reserve time to give feedback.
  • Appraise each direct report annually on a constant rolling feedback basis. Drive appraisal process throughout the unit to formalize performance management.
  • To encourage personal development for succession planning through the company.
  • Provide supervision to all personnel to ensure a safe and professional level of performance and stays current with changes in industry technology.
  • Ensure that training programs are maintained in line with training matrix.
  • Recommend competency-based promotions, salary changes, transfers and disciplinary measures where identified.
  • Take immediate action on performance improvement issues and live a direct response culture (positive and negative) to the employee, secure prompt feedback including written warning letters in corporation with HR when necessary.
  • Ensure all work is performed within the requirements and guidance of the company policy / process.
  • Makes sure operations are prepared and discussed during daily meeting and that the information and plan of operation is completely transmitted to all management either local or expatriate.
  • Must lead the daily operational meeting and organize any other rig related meeting deemed necessary.
  • Tries to achieve standard drilling performance and propose solutions to improve performance if necessary.
  • Initiate modification to any procedure if deemed necessary with department and final Head office approval.
  • To instigate and drive and take ultimate responsibility for continuous improvement initiatives to ensure that the internal process within the organization meet the business needs.
  • Supporting, promoting, and actively participating in the Company’s competency Assurance Program.  Stay current with changes in local laws or customs, which affect the company’s business and adhere to same.
  • To keep abreast of new technology developments in the industry; to promote on-going technical training to subordinate rig personnel to ensure that personnel are technically qualified and that they will provide the client with the best overall performance and service.
  • To lead through effective safety leadership by being personal responsible for Implementation of the QHSE system to ensure a safe working environment without harm to persons or environment.
  • To address QHSE issues at the time of their identification.
  • Ensure that all operations are conducted safely, emphasizing management’s and clients commitment to safety, by reaching QHSE compliance by all levels of operation.
  • Actively pursuit of being “The World’s Safest Drilling Company”.
  • Carry out work assignments to the highest quality level in accordance with policies, roles and responsibilities.
  • Ensure QHSE system is well followed by the Rig crews.
  • Ensure Waste Management Plan is adhered to.
  • Control cost of operations by frequent cost analysis. Determine means of improving efficiency and reducing costs where possible.
  • Review weekly maintenance cost report printouts, operations reports, safety rig and camp inspection reports; investigate and take corrective action when required.
  • To plan and coordinate repairs of major budget items to minimize downtime and provide the most cost-effective means of maintaining company’s equipment to the highest standards and contractual requirements.
  • Ensure that spares and consumables usage is kept under reasonable control, without affecting the efficiency of the operations or the quality of the maintenance

Experience/Competence

  • Minimum 10 years relevant experience in land drilling operations with a minimum of 3-5 years of supervisory roles, including Rig Superintendent.
  • Experience with 3000 HP land rig is a must.
  • Project management capability.

  • Understanding of logistic processes material as well as personnel in the company.
  • Able to demonstrate budgetary control experience and cost awareness.

  • Demonstrate excellent safety leadership.

  • Ability to communicate effectively at all levels assist in effective management of personnel and operations.

  • Ability to build customer relationships.
