Cost Engineer

July 1, 2024

Job Description

As a cost engineer, you will be part of the team of product development engineers. In this role, you will be involved in the systematic analysis of production processes, production techniques, materials and design choices. You will support the project teams during every phase of the development process to make realistic cost estimates. You also set cost price targets and are in close contact with the (strategic) purchasing department. It is your job to see if the proposed cost is acceptable.

For product design and manufacturing, you use a bottom-up analysis and identify the possible costs by using the most cost-efficient (production) processes / material parameters. You will also apply engineering skills to bring the actual cost of the product closer to the target cost. In addition, you will know how to identify and implement cost-down opportunities of our current products and you will help estimate possible cost implications of engineering change orders. This means that you also work together with product lifecycle engineers, supply chain, after-sales and our own production staff.

Responsibilities:

  • Cost Status Breakdown by Stage Gate (NPD)
  • Use cost and value engineering techniques (VAVE) to create additional value and/or reduce costs. In addition, you also perform ”should cost analyses”;
  • Identifying/creating insights into the most important cost drivers with regard to the (new) product/process;
  • Keeping track of and providing insight into the target costs versus the realized (BOM) costs during product development;
  • Making the impact of material and design choices clear to the team and mapping out costs for design alternatives.

Requirements:

  • A completed higher professional education in a technical discipline (e.g. WTB, IDE);
  • Relevant knowledge and experience in cost engineering and value engineering;
  • Experience with cost engineering software – such as APriori;
  • In-depth knowledge of production techniques and parameters, with a focus on injection moulding and sheet metal;
  • Knowledge of obtaining and using cost data of (production) processes/ materials/ machines/ overhead;
  • Be able to build up cost price estimates with the associated tools.
