Job Description

Job Title: Electrical/Electronics Technician: Vegetable Oil Extraction Plant

Department: Engineering & Maintenance

Location: Makueni County

Reports to: Maintenance Superintendent

Job Purpose:

The successful  will candidate will be required to ensure availability, reliability, and efficiency of plant, equipment, utilities, and building facilities in terms of all electrical functions for optimum operations.

Main Accountabilities and Responsibilities:

  • Perform all electrical, electronics, and instrumentation functions in the Manufacturing plants/equipment, utilities & facilities including installation, commissioning, operations, and maintenance relative to ISO standards.
  • Lead innovation management efforts, directing initiatives towards value creation opportunities both internally and externally to optimize plant operations and process improvement initiatives.
  • Measure and monitor effectiveness & efficiency of operational processes and advise on areas of improvement in electrical systems.
  • Identify, develop, recommend, and execute key electrical maintenance efficiency drivers to ensure continuous achievement of set goals and objectives.
  • Develop and execute electrical procedures and processes to support GMP, GPP, and the quality management system.
  • Implement a proactive Quality by Design approach to all electrical products, services, and premises.
  • Implement preventive and reactive measures to avoid and address electrical problems throughout the value chain.
  • Train, develop, supervise, and coordinate an effective electrical team to support business needs and achieve strategic goals.
  • Ensure overall equipment efficiency in terms of electrical systems to ensure availability, reliability, and efficiency of plant & equipment.
  • Develop cost-saving proposals, conduct electrical operational costing and efficiency analysis, and monitor usage of utilities.
  • Formulate and establish electrical preventive maintenance master plan for all plant, equipment, utilities, and systems.
  • Schedule, coordinate, and control all electrical maintenance activities to ensure effective planning and execution.
  • Improve on the electrical Maintenance procedures and effectiveness of electrical maintenance activities to reduce maintenance costs.
  • Handle main power distribution systems for both High voltage and low voltage and address observed electrical risks and hazards.
  • Manage occupational health and safety functions including equipment statutory inspection and mitigate observed health & safety risks and hazards.
  • Handle all electrical transmission systems, hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, and heating systems as required.
  • Implement energy management strategies to reduce electricity consumption and improve electrical safety.
  • Prepare electrical budget/estimates and monitor and control budgetary expenses.
  • Utilize maintenance management software to enhance electrical maintenance functions.
  • Reduce equipment breakdowns and prolong equipment lifespan to improve overall equipment efficiency and reduce power consumption.
  • Practice routine checks and monitoring to track electrical-related anomalies and adjust process parameters accordingly.
  • Employ progressive techniques to reduce or eliminate electrical breakdowns and keep pace with advancements in production/electrical maintenance technology.
  • Establish and ensure standard operating procedures, documentation, and work instructions for electrical maintenance and related functions.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Must be conversant with oil extraction machines or oil refinery process in terms of maintenance, repair, and overhaul.
  • Bachelor of Science in electrical/electronic engineering or mechatronic engineering from a reputable institution.
  • Must have Over 5 years of continuous experience in manufacturing relative to electrical engineering/maintenance functions to ISO/QMS.
  • Conversant with Kaizen, Six Sigma, and lean manufacturing principles.
  • Familiarity with air compressors, boilers, emergency power generators, power distribution systems, heating systems, and process cooling systems.

Key Performance Indicators (Key Result Areas):

  • Power consumption, metering, and control (Kwh/articles produced).
  • Water consumption, metering, and control.
  • Oil consumption.
  • Overall equipment efficiency.
  • Leakage (power, hydraulic oil, air, water).
  • Safe operation (incidence-free, no waste/reject).
  • Equipment statutory compliance.
  • Availability of critical spares stock.
  • Skill inventory and team motivation.
