Empowering women in the energy sector is key to building a more innovative and sustainable future. At WTS Energy, we actively support women in building their skills and advancing their careers. Over the past two years, we have run the event Women and Youth in Renewable Energy(WYRE) to help create clear pathways for women to thrive in energy sector.

Women and Youth in Renewable Energy: what is it?
Women and Youth in Renewable Energy, began in 2024 as WTS Energy’s way of connecting, inspiring, and supporting women pursuing careers in the energy sector. The event creates a space for learning, mentorship, and industry insights, helping participants build skills, explore opportunities, and strengthen their networks within the renewable energy sector.
Why empowering women matters
Even as renewable energy grows rapidly worldwide, women continue to hold a relatively small share of roles in the industry. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), women make up only about 32 % of the global renewable energy workforce, and this figure has changed little since 2019. Female representation is low in technical roles (28 %) and senior leadership roles (19 %). This shows persistent gaps in influence and decision-making within the energy sector.
Similarly, the International Energy Agency (IEA) reports that women account for around one in five energy sector jobs overall, even though they make up around 40 % of the global workforce.
These statistics show that women bring valuable perspectives and talent to the energy sector. However, their contributions remain underrepresented, especially in technical and leadership roles. Empowering women through targeted initiatives like WYRE strengthens the talent pipeline, fosters innovation, and helps ensure the energy sector can meet future challenges with diverse skills and insights.
Key highlights of WYRE 2025
The most recent WYRE event was held in November 2025. It was organized by WTS Foundation, supported by WTS Energy and partners Sun King and Fixo Solutions.
Day One took place at the Spark Hub at the National Industrial Training Authority in Nairobi, where six interactive booths offered LinkedIn support, CV building, mentorship opportunities, and a preview of the new e-mobility curriculum launching in 2026. The aim was simple: help trainees stay connected to career pathways and resources. It also provided space to reconnect with peers and the broader energy community.
Day Two moved to the Technical University of Mombasa, focusing on women leading the energy transition. Six inspiring speakers shared their journeys in mentorship, business development, sustainable transport, and engineering. They highlighted the importance of role models and guidance for young women entering the sector.

Celebrating women driving change
WYRE continues to showcase how WTS Energy and WTS Foundation support the next generation of women leaders in renewable energy. By connecting, inspiring, and equipping young talent, the initiative strengthens the sector and builds lasting opportunities. We celebrate all women driving progress in energy and wish everyone a Happy Women’s Day.
