As the seasons change, so do the challenges we face in our daily work. In October, locations experience high temperatures and humidity, while others face wind or shorter days. These changes can influence how we work, how we feel, and how we stay safe. This seasonal safety checklist serves as a reminder that preparation, smart habits, and teamwork help keep everyone healthy, focused, and safe throughout the year.

Personal Health & Wellbeing
In the energy industry, staying healthy is essential for both safety and performance. Changing conditions, long shifts, and demanding environments can take a toll, so it’s important to care for both your body and your mind.
Physical Wellbeing
- Hydration matters: Drink at least 2–3 liters of water per shift in hot climates.
- Protect your body: Stretch shoulders, wrists, and legs before lifting, climbing, or repetitive tasks to prevent strain and fatigue.
- Medication compliance: Always inform your supervisor or medic if you’re taking prescribed medication that might affect your alertness, balance, or heat tolerance.
Mental Wellbeing
- Recognize stress early: If you find it hard to concentrate or feel irritated easily, that’s a sign to pause and reset.
- Micro-breaks for focus: Take 3–5 minutes every couple of hours to stretch, hydrate, and clear your head, it keeps performance sharp.
- Stay connected: Share challenges or concerns with your supervisor, HSE representative, or colleagues. Most safety improvements start with honest conversations.
Work Environment Readiness
Before every task, take a few minutes to make sure your surroundings and tools are fully ready. A well-prepared work environment prevents incidents and helps you focus and perform better.
Pre-shift inspection
Walk through your work area before starting. Check for spills, loose cables, unstable surfaces, or poor lighting that could cause slips or falls.
Tool and equipment check
Inspect tools and machinery for wear, damage, or calibration issues. Report or replace anything unsafe, never take chances with faulty equipment.
Electrical and mechanical safety
If you’re working with powered or rotating systems, confirm all lockout/tagout (LOTO) steps are followed. Always verify grounding before handling electrical tools.
Daily safety checklist, use it properly
Most sites already have a safety checklist. Take time to go through it carefully instead of scrolling through. Look, listen, and test before you tick each box, it’s a simple habit that prevents small issues from turning into incidents.
Temperature & PPE Adaptation
Wearing the right protective gear and adapting to seasonal conditions is about keeping yourself safe and comfortable.
Inspect and maintain your PPE
- Check helmets, gloves, boots, harnesses, and other gear for wear or damage before every shift.
- Replace or repair worn items immediately; never compromise safety for convenience.
Anticipate seasonal hazards
- Rain, ice, or dust can create slippery or unstable surfaces, use extra caution and tools like anti-slip mats if needed.
- Offshore or remote teams should carry extra PPE and weather-appropriate gear for sudden changes.
Comfort and practicality matter
- PPE should allow movement, clear vision, and comfort throughout your shift.
- Test new gear before important tasks to make sure it doesn’t interfere with work.
Team Awareness & Communication
Safety is a team effort. Being aware of your surroundings, watching out for colleagues, and communicating clearly can prevent accidents and create a supportive work environment.
Toolbox talks : Use toolbox talks or short team meetings to discuss the day’s tasks, potential hazards, and seasonal considerations.
Watch out for each other: Pay attention to teammates’ actions and behavior. Offer gentle reminders if you notice unsafe practices.
Clear communication: Confirm instructions and repeat back critical information to ensure understanding.
Encourage teams: Small encouragements, like a “good check” or “thanks for watching out,” reinforce a positive safety culture.
