Radio Operator

Job Description

FUNCTIONS:

The fundamental expectation is that all functions are performed in compliance with the Company’s Operational Discipline expectations and HSE requirements. When considering task assignments for the Radio Operator, the Supervisor and Radio Operator will apply the task planning rules (CAKES) to determine whether the assigned role is appropriate. This means confirming that the individuals involved have the necessary knowledge, skills, and experience to perform the task, and that the work plan complies with policy before it is authorized for execution.

GENERAL DUTIES:

  • Receive and transmit messages between the platform and land bases, supply vessels, helicopters, and other stations by radiotelephone.
  • Operate all communication equipment in the radio room and ensure that it is well maintained and operational.
  • Maintain radio watch on maritime and aeronautical emergency frequencies.
  • Maintain records/logs of all radio communications to and from the platform. Maintain records of telephone charges from the facility (if applicable).
  • Ensure maintenance of all electronic navigation aids where applicable.
  • Test the backup SARTS and EPIRBS radio equipment and the radio equipment in the lifeboats as necessary. These tests should include checking the batteries in the radio room.
  • Inform the Master/OIM of any emergency situations in the vicinity of the facility.
  • Inform the Helicopter Landing Officer and the control room of all planned helicopter traffic to the platform.
  • Establish and maintain radio contact with helicopter traffic to and from the platform. Inform pilots of landing authorizations, weather conditions, etc., and record in the helicopter movement log.
